Basilica di San Lorenzo

This church is in the area of the Mercato di San Lorenzo, the most active food market in the city. The church belongs to an important religious complex of buildings also including the Chapels Medici and the Biblioteca Mediceo-Laurenziana. Although the construction of the Basilica changed hands of many architects, it was handled at times by world famous artists Brunelleschi and Michelangelo. The Basilica is also a haven of beautiful art. Some of the highlights are the two pulpits by Donatello, Desiderio da Settignano's marble tabernacle, and Pietro Annigoni's Saint Joseph and Christ in the Workshop. This piece is perhaps the only modern piece exhibited in a Florentine church. Cosimo Medici, as well as other members of the Medici family, and Donatello are buried within the Basilica.
